Reading and Literacy

It would be GREAT if every child naturally loved reading - it is one of the most basic life skills in our world. If a child doesn't "take" to reading naturally, they often feel pressure, even in the most relaxed families and progressive schools to perform well - to "get it."    Most of the time, a child's struggle with reading comes from a lack of confidence, and a lack or misunderstanding of basic skills, such as phonological awareness.  The program I use is an Orton-Gillingham- based sequential program

My approach to everything is always - Child First. Get to know the child, what they are proud of, what their fears are.  Build on their confidence, and create fun ways to teach and reinforce the skills they need. Every child is capable of reading and writing and it doesn't have to be painful!

Math Skills

Similarly, my key to helping students  with frustrating math concepts
is to see the way they see the problem, and show them concrete
ways of solving them, using  games and manipulatives
that are fun for them.

Testimonials From Parents

"Michelle is a kind and engaging tutor. She has worked with my son, who has dyslexia, for over a year. I have seen him grow through her work with him, both in confidence and academic ability. Michelle is not only effective, but she consistently makes learning fun. He truly looks forward to his sessions with her. Michelle is keenly aware that learning  does not happen in a vacuum. She regularly connects with his teachers to ensure that everyone is on the same page and working towards the same goal. She has truly made a difference in our lives."

"I wish to offer the highest recommendation for the tutoring services of Michelle Wolin.  After many struggles and meetings with the school's literary expert, it was recommended that we seek out Michelle. My daughter was falling behind, and becoming paralyzed in her fear of being called on in class.  She was ashamed of her difficulty in being able to catch on quickly.  It was clear from the start that Michelle was able to provide whatever the missing link was. My daughter was exhilarated after the first meeting, and happily accepted the news that she would be meeting with her twice a week. Her confidence started returning almost immediately, and within a month her teacher reported that she was volunteering to read in class.  In our last parent teacher meeting, we were told we could hold off on doing informal evaluation for learning differences for now, considering the rate at which she caught up. Because of everything she has done for my daughter, Michelle is a big hero in my family. I am delighted to vouch for her to any parent who is looking for extra help for their child." -L. Darnton
